Suitability
Regular HIV testing ensures early detection and treatment, which is crucial for managing the disease and preventing its spread. HIV testing is recommended for the following individuals and groups:
- Anyone Who Has Never Been Tested. Everyone should get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine healthcare.
- Sexually Active Individuals
- People with multiple sexual partners.
- Those who have had unprotected sex (without a condom or PrEP).
- Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM). Higher risk group; testing is recommended every 3 to 6 months.
- People with HIV-Positive Partners to monitor their own HIV status.
- History of STIs. Having another STI can increase the risk of HIV
- Intravenous Drug Users. Those who share needles or other injection equipment.
- Pregnant Women to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
- People Who Have Been Sexually Assaulted. Immediate and follow-up testing is crucial
- People in High-Risk Occupations. Healthcare workers and others who may be exposed to blood or body fluids.
- Individuals Who Have Had a Blood Transfusion or Organ Transplant Between 1978 and 1985, before routine HIV screening of blood donations began.
- People with Tuberculosis or Hepatitis. Co-infections are common, and they increase the risk of HIV.

Follow-up
- We have partnered with The Terrence Higgins Trust who are the leading HIV and sexual health charity and on a mission to end new transmissions of HIV in the UK by 2030.
- HIV self-tests are highly accurate but not infallible. False positives and false negatives can occur, especially if the test is taken during the window period (the time between potential exposure and when the test can detect HIV antibodies).
- Positive results should be confirmed with a follow-up test at a healthcare facility. Even if the result is negative but there's been recent exposure or ongoing risk, it’s advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
- Self-tests in isolation are not a substitute for seeing a doctor, and results should be considered alongside your symptoms and medical history. You should not make a diagnosis or start any treatment without a consultation with a doctor or a trained healthcare professional.
