Phenergan tablets are designed to treat symptoms such as:
- Allergic reactions such as hay fever and rashes
- Travel sickness
- Insomnia
Phenergan is a drowsy antihistamine tablet.
How Phenergan works
Phenergan belongs to a group of medicines known as phenothiazines which work by blocking histamine, the natural substance your body makes during an allergic reaction.
The tablets also work directly on your brain to help you feel more relaxed.
Warnings
Phenergan may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you suffer from severe dizziness, drowsiness or headaches.
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if:
- You have asthma or bronchitis
- You have epilepsy
- You have any severe heart problems or a family history of heart disease
- You have an irregular heartbeat
- You have kidney problems
- You have liver problems
Directions
Always take Phenergan exactly as stated in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / pharmacist has advised.
The dosage of the medication depends on the reason you need it.
NOT TO BE GIVEN TO CHILDREN UNDER 5yrs OLD
FOR SHORT-TERM USE ONLY
Allergies such as hay fever, hives and rashes
- Children over 10 years old and adults: Start by taking 1 tablet at night. If necessary, you can increase the dose to 2 tablets a day.
- Children 5-10 years old: 1 tablet should be given at night. Do not give your child more than 1 tablet a day.
Nausea & vomiting
Children over 10 years old and adults: Take 1 tablet the night before a journey. If required, you can take another dose 6-8 hours after the first.
Short-term sedative for children or short-term treatment for insomnia in adults
- Children over 10 years old and adults: 1-2 tablets should be taken at night.
- Children 5-10 years old: 1 tablet should be taken at night.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Phenergan may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody.
Common side effects include:
- Blurred Vision
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
- Difficulty passing urine, especially in the elderly or children
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Indigestion
- Increased sensitivity to the sun
- Skin rashes, including itching and red and raised lumps
If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
If you experience the following side effects, stop taking the tablets and seek medical advice immediately:
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), as this could be an issue with your liver
- Muscle stiffness or shaking
- Unusual movements of the tongue, muscle spasms in the face, being unable to control your facial muscles, rolling eyes and trembling
- A fast, irregular, forceful or uneven heartbeat
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist before taking this product.
Do not take this medication if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) to treat depression in the last two weeks.
Tell your healthcare provider if you are taking the following medication:
- Tricyclic antidepressants e.g. ending with tyline or lepin
- Medicines to help you sleep or feel more relaxed
- Pain relievers e.g. aspirin
- Anticholinergic medicines used for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), asthma or a weak bladder
- Medicines for mental health e.g. antipsychotics
- Medicines to treat an irregular heartbeat
- Antimicrobials e.g. ending with mycin or oxacin
Age restrictions
You must be over 18 to purchase this medicine
NOT suitable for children under 5 years old.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
This medication should not be taken 2 weeks before you are due to give birth. Do not take this product while you are breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Alcohol
Do not drink alcohol whilst you are taking this medication.
Driving and operating machinery
This product can make you feel drowsy. If you are affected, do not drive or operate machinery until you feel safe enough to do so.
Storage information
Store below 25°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
